Tax collector Katharina Kamp is soon to be promoted to an important position. On one of her rounds, Katharina makes the acquaintance of eccentric Carl von Balkhausen, whose debt-ridden stud “Sonnenhof” is the subject of Katharina’s audit. Here she receives terrible news: Her brother and his wife have been killed in a car crash, which only her niece, 14-year-old Lara, survived. Katharina immediately resolves to take care of the traumatised child. Lara’s temporary paralysis of the legs can be treated medically, but the teenager refuses to participate in any therapeutic measures. He has the horse delivered to his stud, takes great care of it and at the same time looks after a visibly blossoming Lara. The “tax-evader” now appears in a very different light. As far as Katharina is concerned, “Sonnenhof” is no longer just a case with a reference number. With her new course of action, she even risks her upcoming promotion …
