Canadian whale researcher, Janie Wray and her German-Canadian colleague, Hermann Meuter, live, totally isolated yet not always alone, on Gil Island. Just a stone's throw from their doors, humpback whales and Orcas have their hunting grounds. The observations of the two researchers are intended to help protect this unique territory and prevent the oil industry majors from accessing the area. One of their closest human neighbours is the river ranger, Stan Hutchings, who monitors the area's lakes and streams, and keeps tabs on the salmon fish population for the Canadian government. Also close by is the only person who knows where the mysterious, white ghost bears live: bear expert Marven Robinson, a Gitga'at coastal Indian. The small village in which Marven lives is only accessible by ferry. Just recently, all 35 school-age children at the village school can now enjoy a higher gradu-ation. This is made possible by their rector, Cameron Hill, who brings high school teachers from Vancouver to the wilderness via a live internet link.
