Deafening waterfalls, ancient forests and an impressive volcanic landscape with black beaches: La Palma is a dream island for nature lovers. It is by far the island of the Canaries with the most greenery; in fact, almost half of the island is covered with forests. On the Roque de los Muchachos, at 2400 metres, the highest mountain on Las Palmas, is one of the world’s largest reflector telescopes. Astrophysists love the island, as it is the perfect place from where to look into space. Vintners from the south of the island belong to the pioneers of the Bodega Submarina de Canarias, the art of storing wine underwater. Stored in the sea, the wine tastes more aromatic and fresh. Four metres of woo: with the “Salto del Pastorden lances lead down into the gorge, across an abyss or onto the next rocky plateau: with the “Salto del Pastor”, impassable, steep terrain is easily overcome. Sometimes, the best jumpers find themselves involved in search and rescue operations. In the remote gorges of the island, there are countless Barrancos, natural caves, in which the Guanches once made their homes. To this day, these rustic cave dwellings attract those who no longer care to live with urban stress.
