The Wismar Bay is unique in its diversity along the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast: Cliffs, sandy beaches, the Salzhaff (part of the bay, almost cut off by the spit of the Wustrow and the Boiersdorf Werder peninsula), enchanted islands and, last but not least, the Hanseatic city of Wismar, with its gothic brick buildings, which help form the UNESCO World Heritage Site. For most of her life, Ramona Stelzer only understood fish to be a delicious ingredient between two bun halves. But when the goldsmith first got hold of fish leather, a business idea was born: she processes fish skin, a unique natural product, into fine jewellery. At the beginning of the breeding season, ranger Jürgen Weigel has his hands full preventing amateur sea captains and water sportsmen and women from entering the EU bird protection zone. This is so time-consuming, he hardly ever has time to pay the island caretaker of Langenwerder a visit. He often witnesses a strange phenomenon: field hares that drink salt water! For beachgoers, seaweed is a stinking nuisance, but for Steffen Aldag it's a valuable raw material. Dried, it can be used as natural insulation and a filling for upholstery. The Church of St. Nicholas is one of most significant examples of brick Gothic. Today, the metre-long historic ship model, made by Wismar modeller Robert Dähncke, still testifies to the bond with the sea.
