The aged Miss Sophy insists on celebrating her 90th birthday in exactly the same way as she has done on her birthdays in earlier years. She orders her butler James to set the table for those guests who have always celebrated her birthdays with her. They are Sir Toby, Admiral von Schneider, Mr. Pomeroy and Mr. Winterbottom. But these guests are no longer alive, and so James has to take over their roles in turn. This means that he is forced to drink on behalf of each of the non-existent guests. As a result James gets steadily drunker, and the tiger-skin he continually tries to avoid, becomes more and more of a menace...
