More than 2000 islands belong to Estonia and each of them has its own character. Under Soviet rule, most of them served as military exclusion zones. Visits were prohibited, boats were locked away at night and the beaches monitored. All this out of a fear that people could attempt to flee to Finland or Sweden. On the positive side, nature was preserved, making Hiiumma Estonia's most forested region. The trees inspired Jaan Alliksoo to construct bizarre buildings of driftwood, flotsam and jetsam. In the meantime, an entire, fantastic village has been created, with a spectacular replica of the Eifel Tower in its midst. Kihnu is one of 19 inhabited Estonian islands. Thanks to its seclusion, charming traditions have been preserved. As a lighthouse keeper, ice cream producer and contract knitter for the famous Kihnu sweaters, Elly Karjam is a so-called "multi-jobber". Birch trees provide the necessary material for the so-called "Viht". This bunch of birch branches is an important accessory on the traditional Midsummer sauna session.
