Sonja Brunner works for the Department of Corrections in the local prison. For years now, she has been earning the family income, keeping afloat both her husband Jens and stepdaughter Iris. Jens works as a freelance author and hopes to finally land a contract for his new novel. After an incident with the inmate Michael Zeuner, who has taken her hostage in an attempt to break out of prison, Sonja requests a transfer to another prison - shoving aside the memory, burying herself in her work. And at first, everything seems to work out, but the financial pressure at home is growing. Inmate Walter sees this and starts to take advantage of Sonja's naiveté, receiving small favours for money. When Zeuner is transferred to her new workplace, Sonja gets pressured into corruption by Zeuner and Walter. But help comes from an unlikely place: her only confidant at the new prison is inmate and wife killer Robert Sturm.
