A thoroughly inconspicuous man is found murdered in the middle of idyllic countryside. His wife, Martina Käster, is in deep sorrow and cannot understand who could possibly have had a motive for the murder. Charlotte Lindholm conducts the investigation and discovers that the seemingly respectable husband apparently led a double life. On the edge of a forest, Charlotte comes across a cottage, in which she finds photographs of a young woman and children's toys - could this be the murdered man's secret family? It certainly seems that way. When the inspector attempts to find the woman and child on the photographs, she is confronted with more inconsistencies. For Charlotte Lindholm, the murder is developing into a case in which nothing is as it seems.
