Julia, a 17-year-old schoolgirl, goes to the police station blaming her brother for the murder of her school friend Maria. The very next morning, Maria's body really is recovered from the fjord. Despite coming across a whole row of reasons why Julia's brother would come into question regarding the murder, detectives Klaus Borowski and Sarah Brandt have trouble understanding why Julia should betray him in this way. It is not until they discover that she secretly converted to Islam that they see light at the end of the tunnel. But Borowski and Brandt are not alone in their investigations: the State Security section of the LKA, led by Chief Kesting, apparently seem to be following their own, unscrupulous agenda.
