The corpse of village beauty Carmelo Tozzi is found in the catacombs of the Palazzo Ducale of the ancient Italian town of Urbino. Everything at the crime scene indicates a ritual murder, with several suspects. Provincial police officer Roberto Rossi, who only wants an easy life, has to take on the case, as all of his professional colleagues are off sick. Together with lady friend and forensic pathologist in waiting, Malpomena del Vecchio they begin their investigations. Strange signs on the ritually laid out corpse are an initial indication of the mysterious nature of the case. Within a short space of time, former German Inspector Gruber, who simply cannot suppress his passion for criminology, volunteers to help out on the case…
