On Juist, all of the really hard work is carried out by horses, even the garbage disposal. Up there on the coachbox, behind the two carthorses, Horst Wolfert, Ode Odens and Abbo Broeckelmann have got the reins firmly in their hands. They traverse the traffic-free island all day long in order to collect refuse. Trailing behind the coach is a fairly hearty aroma, especially when they have collected recyclables and organic waste. But the men endure it with the same composure as their horses.
The Islands most famous resident is Rufus Handschuh. It's almost im-possible to visit Juist without bumping into him. He wears a grey uniform cap from army surplus and a pair of tinted glasses, behind which his alert eyes flash. When the ferryboat moors, Rufus, Germany's oldest still working baggage porter is there: a freelancer, good tempered and agile, despite his advanced age! To make work a little more com-fortable, Rufus bought himself an electric bicycle. The competition has-n't got a chance!
