Hanna and Helmut lead an ostensibly idyllic life with their two daughters, Mia and Klara and housekeeper Desi, on a farm in South Africa. But ever since their eldest son's fatal accident, nothing is as it once was. Hanna clings to memories and Helmut suppresses his pain by devoting himself entirely to the farm and his cheetah project. The desperate attempt to fill the void results in the family taking in 17-year-old Kai, from Germany. Actually sentenced to youth detention, Kai has been sent to "open prison" in South Africa, to be gradually reintegrated into society. But how to reintegrate someone who has never known "normal" family life; someone who has never learned to respond to the needs of others? The integration project seems doomed to fail and break the family apart once and for all…
