Berlin 1932: The consequences of the global economic crisis lead to social and political unrest. The Weimar Republic is torn between left and right wing extremists struggling for supremacy - Berlin is a powder keg. A conflict that grips whole families; like liberal SPD delegate Albert and his younger brother Erwin, who belongs to a radical, communist cell. After visiting his sick brother in Denmark, Albert is unwittingly used by him as a courier and is therefore in grave danger. In the train home, he meets the vivacious Henny, who, during a police control, helps him out of a tricky situation. A tentative love develops between them, which is overshadowed by the political and social circumstances. Albert is a Jewish doctor who tries to help the poorest of the poor and who as Member of Parliament (Reichstag), campaigns for the continuity of the young German democracy. Henny comes from a wealthy, conservative family, to which the Nazi careerist Erhart von Kühn also belongs. De-spite pressure from her uncle, Henny decides not to take over the family estate agency and becomes the owner of a ballroom. The former owner, Matze Belzig, has resolved to leave the country for America, as the situation for Jews and free spirits like him is becoming increasingly more difficult. Irrespective of all obstacles, Henny and Albert's mutual attraction brings them together time and again; until the end of February 1933, when the situation on the streets of Berlin escalates, the Reichstag burns and the reign of terror begins…
