Claudia Kayser lives with her daughter Carolin in the up-market Ham-burg suburb of Blankenese. After the death of her husband a few years ago, she now has her life back on track: she manages her job as a paediatric surgeon successfully, just as well as her daughter's upbring-ing and is happy in her new relationship with the family lawyer, Thomas. But, now, on Carolin's 17th birthday of all times, her world is about to disjoint: Carolin coincidentally discovers that she was adopted as a baby and apart from feeling hurt, she reproaches Claudia. She wastes no time and begins to search for her biological mother, which leads her to the happy-go-lucky, but chronically bankrupt Chantal, who, at 35, is the complete opposite of the more or less reserved and tight-lipped Claudia. While Carolin falls ever deeper under Chantal's spell, Claudia is powerless and forced to watch her daughter slipping away slowly. But when Caroline decides to move into Chantal's tiny apartment in a colourful in-quarter, Chantal realises that, like before, she is unable to take on the responsibility of being a mother for the child. Disoriented, Carolin feels abandoned by both mothers. Disappointed and hurt, she runs away to a friend at a skydive school and in her desperation, climbs into a small sports plane, apparently with nothing to lose...
